US Womens’ Triathlon Series, Federal Way

Worked late the nite before so I did not bother to load my bike into the car, thought I would wait til morning.  Afterall, I had just tuned it up at bike shop and rode 15 miles the day before… so imagine my surprise %?#?*?$ when I found I had a rear flat @ 0500 on race day!!!! Now, I do know how to change a flat, in about 30 minutes, but I did not have 30 minutes, so I threw it in the car and PRAYED there was a bike mechanic at the course, and whew!  there was.  I had a spare tube and he fixed me up in under 5 minutes.  Thanks Phil!
So, off and swimming!
I had a strong swim, .75k in open water- felt comfortable, my breathing was nice and even but the fog on the water did make the orange buoys a little hard to differentiate from the hot pink swimcaps that my wave was wearing….still, made good time.  Passed many swimmers from earlier waves!  Out and ran to bike, got out of wetsuit, took off riding - 12.5 miles.  Hard course as far as hills go, but scenic and windy (that is “Y-ndy” not windy).  All was good, though I am a slow cyclist, until the transition line where I just somehow forgot to unclip my cycling cleat from my pedal and when I stopped, completely crashed to the ground.  OUCH!  I am a little old to be falling off my bike, esp in front of a crowd.  I got a lot of “Ohs”  when I went down, then a lot of clapping when I managed to get back up!  EMBARASSING!  but not hurt, well, not badly…bruises and tight shoulder, but liveable…
Then on to the 4mi run.  Was strong on whole course except for one gnarly hill that I walked a little on.

Overall, strong race.  I was 6th out of 26 women age 40-44, and 28th out of 111 racers.  Pretty pleased with myself.  Good start to the season I hope.  Need a little work on the bike thing!
p.s.I notcied that this was my 11th triathlon, on the 11th, and they accidently printed 2011 on my race number for the year… any spinal tap fans out there?  these go to 11!

time to do an Oly Tri or not????

Next saturday will be my 9th sprint Tri.  I love them.  I have slacked in my Tri training this summer though b/c I trained all spring for the RocknRoll Half Marathon (a first for me) and now that I have got the mileage up, I keep running 5-8miles 2-3x/week, leaving little time in my busy life for cycling (which I do not love - just look at my graphs) or swimming.  So, next saturday is for fun really, just to get another race in.  It is a course I did two months ago and really enjoyed.  So, on 9/12 is my last Tri of the season and I can choose sprint or olympic.  I wanted to do an olympic this summer, but again, did not train for it. I am easily capable of doing all three distances, and I am almost certain that I can complete all three back to back if I dont push too hard, or push at all…  But see, I am competitive, mostly with myself, though I do pick rabbits on the course in each leg, and I am not sure how I will feel about doing it and not having a competitive time.  I am afraid of feeling too slow on the course, and that letting that get in my head, and then hating myself, etc, etc.  you know how that head stuff happens.  Sometimes 6 miles is easy to run, other days it is the hardest thing in the world… If I am too in my head before the run, I may really struggle.  Yet, I have never quit anything, so I am thinking I should just do it to do it.  I will create a baseline performance, and then next year, anything I train for will only be better, right?  I just read the “30 thoughts for a victorious triathlete” from Triathlon Geek and # 16 is about Fear.  It says “if you fear a bike distance you have never accomplished before, bike the distance and face fear in its face.  This breaks the mental threshold that has worried you.  Fear is in fact physical.  Take control of your body first.  Condition your mind next.”  So, my body is strong and can do the oly distance, it is only in my mind that I may not be able to finish, so I should just try it.  Just Tri it, right?

Torchlight Run 8K- 07/25/2009

I thought I would vomit.  It was so hot for Seattle, and unfortunately, the Torchlight Run is in the evening, 630pm, when it is at its hottest.  Clouds were moving in, I prayed for rain.  It did come, but not until 745pm, after the run.  It was about 88 degrees.  I am a sweater…and in that heat and humidity, I get no evaporation, so I just get hotter and hotter, and feel sicker and sicker.  We ran up the 1st St exit onto the Viaduct.  That was cool because of the view and where I was running, but it was a hot start.  Then into the Battery Street tunnel.  I am not usually claustrophobic, but it was dark and hot and I couldn’t see the light at the end.  I wanted to walk to try and cool off, but not in there.  I ran until just outside, then I walked for the first time.  I always feel defeated when I break my pace, but I was just too overheated and it was not yet 2miles.

Then, up Dexter to Denny.  Not bad.  Hitting 4th was another reality check.  I had walked twice now, and the nausea was increasing.  My legs felt strong, but I was just so heat sick.  On 4th, the curbs are lined with the spectators awaiting the Torchlight Parade.  “You can’t walk now,” I thought.  Too embarassing.  It was hard to focus, there were kids in the street wanting to high five the runners.  That was fun, but allI could think was, “where can I duck out of this race and just blend into the crowd and call a friend…”.  Once we made it up the hill portion of 4th (not really a hill, but it could have been Mt. Rainier for how icky I felt), I saw the library, then Columbia Tower and now it was downhill.  A few turns and the final turn was a short sprint to the Finish!  I figured all my moaning and walking put me well over a 10″ mile, but my watch said 48:59.  I was pleased.  My ipod shuffle had a playlist just for an 8K  (a goal for 10min miles) and I was right on target with the last song… I was soaked and my stomach was iffy, but in the end, it was worth it to know that I run a well-controlled pace and have done it enough now that I do it strongly, even in circumstances that challenge me, physically or mentally.    Then we went to Fuji Sushi and had an excellent dinner!  A great Seattle evening…

Run - RocknRoll Half Marathon - 06/27/2009

ok, this is what is was all about the last 3 months.  And my goal was supposed to be to finish, but secretly, it was to finish in under 2′10″…I did it!  I also thought I would set the next goal for a full marathon after having come this far, but when I tunred @ mile 12 towards the finish, and the Full runners turned towards another 14.2miles, I swore right then that would never be me!  A Half is hard enough and I am so proud that I could come this far.  It should be called something else though b/c “half” minimizes how much of challenge and accomplishment 13.1 really is.  congrats to all my fellow Seatle Rocknrollers!

  • Type: Run
